Republic of Ireland -1,000 pubs forced to close in
One in eight bars in the Republic of Ireland have closed in the past six years.
New figures show how the recession, rural depopulation, lifestyle changes and the drink-driving offensive have contributed to the demise of over 1,000 pubs since 2005.
The number of closures is expected to accelerate further in the coming months, with even stricter drink-driving limits being introduced and government cuts set to further slash consumer spending.Revenue Commissioner records obtained by the Irish Independent show the country had 8,617 pubs in 2005, at the height of the Celtic Tiger boom.
However, the number of pubs has fallen by 1,108 to just 7,509 this month.Leitrim has lost almost one-fifth of all its pubs, down from 140 in 2005 to its current 110.
In Donegal, 71 pubs have closed down, leaving 369 of the 440 operating a few years ago. And in Cork, 211 pubs have closed.

Swindon Brewery Raises Beer Price By 20p
Beer drinkers are to be hit in the pocket again as Arkell’s raises the price of a pint, reports the Swindon Advertiser.
In a leaked memo from an angered landlord it was revealed that the local brewery, which has 30 pubs in the town and more than 100 in total, would be raising the price of a pint by up to 20p.
The brewey has blamed an increase in the minimum wage, high energy costs and an increase in employers’ national insurance contributions for the hike.
From today, a pint of 3Bs in an Arkell’s pub will increase from £2.50 to £2.70 and a price of Stella will go up to £3.70 from £3.30.
Craig Titchener, head of managed houses at the brewery, said: “Arkell’s attempts to keep prices as low as they can for as long as they can and I am sure all Arkell’s landlords respect this.
“However, every business is affected by the current economic downturn.
“We have seen a 28 per cent increase in energy costs, a one per cent increase in national insurance and an increase in business rates and minimum wage – they all add up. We don’t do this lightly.”

Licensed property news: Pubs taking advantage of growing demand for fine dining
Investors looking to buy a pub and cash in on the enduring strength of the UK hospitality sector are likely to be noting with interest the steady movement towards fine dining in the nation's licensed premises.
Over recent years, the traditional pub model has been, in many places, replaced by the so-called gastro-pub model as landlords recognise the potential benefits of offering good food alongside a friendly welcome and a good pint.
Now, it appears that many establishments are looking to go the extra mile, aiming for the very top of the hospitality market and the financial returns this can generate.
Just this month, the Hand and Flowers in Buckinghamshire became the first pub in Britain to be awarded two Michelin stars, the coveted award for fine dining.
Notably, despite having a world-class chef at work in the kitchen, the historic establishment is still very much a traditional village pub, offering a range of ales on tap and an open fire place.
What's more, the award-winning fare is also affordable, illustrating that investors buying a pub and looking to take advantage of the growing demand for high-quality food needn't go too far away from the traditional model of an English-style pub.
Commenting, Michelin Guide editor Rebecca Burr explained that, while pubs selling just booze may be struggling, those also offering their customers good food tend to be doing well, something that her team see on a daily basis.
She added: "We have inspectors coming back to the office saying 'What recession?'. Many places are thriving."
At the same time, three other pubs in England also won stars in this latest round of Michelin Awards, meaning 13 licensed premises have the world-famous accolade, alongside the 550 establishments listed in its collection of UK guides.
Given that many breweries are closing down and many traditional pubs are struggling for business as consumers continue to keep discretionary spending to a minimum, this could prompt many individual landlords, as well as some pub companies, to diversify into the fine-dining sector over the coming months and years.
Meanwhile, up in Yorkshire, it has been announced that the redevelopment of the former Tetley's brewery in Leeds could take more than ten years to complete.According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, while the city council has given the green light to plans to revamp the historic site, it could be at least a decade before the building is fully transformed into a mix of new residential and commercial properties.

Licensed property news: Investors may focus on hotels for sale as sector grows
Hotels, bars and restaurants in London have been tipped to play a leading role in driving the UK economy out of recession, with this both creating thousands of new jobs as well as numerous opportunities for those looking to put money into hospitality sector property.
While growth in the UK economy as a whole remains sluggish, a spate of news reports indicate that the national hospitality sector is bucking the trend, with hoteliers in particular reporting renewed optimism.
According to a study published by Oxford Economics in partnership with the British Hospitality Association (BHA), tens of thousands of new jobs are set to be created by the sector's growth over the next few years.
Notably, this will go hand-in-hand with the construction and opening of new properties, including hotels and restaurants, again spelling good news for investors keen to tap into this potential.
The newly-published report highlights the importance of the next few months to the general wellbeing of not just the hospitality sector but of the UK economy as a whole.
In particular, it is widely-anticipated that the 2012 London Olympics, as well as the Queen's Golden Jubilee, which will be celebrated next year also, will go a long way towards placing the country firmly on the road to economic recovery, just as prime minister David Cameron noted back in the summer of 2010.
Illustrating the extent to which opportunities for property investment in hotels have picked up over recent months, the study found that more than 50 new hotels have been opened in Wales since 2000, with these creating thousands of people, generating millions for the Welsh economy and potentially helping to generate significant returns for investors.
Such a sense of optimism is supported by a separate report, this one the Hospitality Employment Index published by Caterer.com and People 1st.
According to the duo's joint research, the number of new jobs being created in the sector is growing at its fastest rate for more than two years right now, with the upcoming Olympics again being cited as the main driver of this trend.
Notably, releasing their findings, the pair state that such an upturn in employment opportunities is perhaps the strongest signal yet that the hospitality sector is bucking the national economic trend and going from strength to strength in the face of a possible double-dip recession.
Meanwhile, the UK culture secretary Jeremy Hunt has revealed that the government is in talks with the hospitality sector over the possibility of offering Britons discounted rates in hotels, bars and restaurants in London for the duration of the 2012 Games in order to prevent a mass exodus out of the country next summer.

Spirit Sales Up While Punch Taverns Profits Fall
Spirit Pub Co reported a 17 percent rise in full-year pretax profit, at the top end of expectations, while Punch Taverns , from which it demerged earlier this year, said full-year profit fell.
"We have made a good start to the new financial year and, while we expect the consumer environment to be more challenging, we are well positioned to move forward," Ian Dyson, chief executive of managed-pub operator Spirit, said on Thursday.
Sales at pubs open more than a year were up 4.8 percent in the eight weeks since Aug. 20, helped by recent good weather, said Spirit, which owns over 800 pubs in Britain including the Chef & Brewer chain.

Queens Silver Jubilee Licensing Hours
The Government could extend opening hours for pubs and bars during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee weekend, Home Secretary Theresa May has said.
Under the plans, pubs, bars, community and village halls and other licensed venues in England and Wales will be able to open until 1am on Friday 1 June and Saturday 2 June next year.
British Beer & Pub Association chief executive Brigid Simmonds welcomed the move: "This is good news, as we have been calling for extra hours, which will keep Britain's pubs right at the heart of this huge national celebration, just as they were for the Royal Wedding.
"We will be hoping to persuade the Government to extend this further, and certainly to the Olympic and Paralympic opening and closing ceremonies."

RPI Increase Impact on Tenanted Pub Rents
The Retail Price Index (RPI) measure rose to 5.6% from 5.2% in August, according to the Office of National Statistics.
Fears: RPI increase will affect tenants due for rent review
With around half of the UK’s tenanted pubs having RPI increases written into their leases, this new rise will be a blow to tenants due for an annual rent review with pub companies who increase rent levels according in line with RPI.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measure was also up in August, reaching 5.2% from a previous 4.5%, as the UK's inflation rate rose in September.
Analysts claim an increase in energy costs was behind a large proportion of the rise in the inflation rate.
Leases that increase rent in line with RPI and CPI are not new. But they have become increasingly prevalent in the last couple of years and around 60% of all agreements within the Enterprise Inns estate, for example, have annual rent increases in line with RPI.

UK Pubs Awarded Michelin Stars
- The Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2012 awarded two stars to a pub for the first time at its launch last week, reports Reuters.
Michelin gave the prestigious culinary award to the Hand and Flowers in Marlow, in the southern English county of Buckinghamshire. The pub was opened by Tom and Beth Kerridge in 2005 and received its first Michelin star the following year.
"This is a good news story for the British pub industry and confirms our view that pubs serving good food are the ones that continue to thrive," guide editor Rebecca Burr said in a statement. "In the 2012 guide we are delighted to have 13 pubs with Michelin stars."
The second restaurant to be promoted to two-star level in the 2012 edition of the guide is Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottingham.
The guide said Sat's cooking has always been original and creative and now focus has been added to the flair. It gained its first star in 2003.

Pubs chains' last chance to cut landlord's beer ties
Major pub chains such as Burton-based Marston’s and Punch Taverns have come under fire for the way they treat landlords. It is claimed landlords are forced into a ‘beer tie’ which forces them to pay skyhigh prices for alcohol from the pub companies.
An influential parliamentary committee recently came down on the side of landlords by claiming pub companies were out of control and needed Government regulation.
It is understood the pub companies have been given one final chance to reform and treat landlords more fairly or be hit with new legislation.
The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), which represents pub companies, previously said the committee’s recommendations, if adopted, would be disastrous for the industry and would cause more pub closures.
The parliamentary committee said pub industries should be regulated by a statutory body, like Ofsted or Ofgem, with powers to punish those which stepped out of line.
The measure is backed by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), which said in a statement: “A group of powerful MPs on the Business Select Committee has backed CAMRA’s call for the large pub companies to provide genuine free-of-tie options and guest beer rights to their lessees, and to comply with a legally enforceable code of practice backed by an adjudicator.
“The Government has previously promised to back the committee’s findings and so we are getting close to meaningful action to rein in the conduct of the large pub companies.”
It continued: “This will result in better pubs, better value for money and fewer pub closures. These reforms are crucial to ensure small brewers can get their beers into local pubs.
“Nine out of the 14 pubs closing each week are tied pubs and new research from the Institute for Public Policy research think tank has found that tied pubs are much more likely to be facing financial difficulties.”

Beer prices: 28p regional gap in cost of a pint
The cheapest pint of beer is 28p cheaper in pubs in the north of England compared with south-eastern hostelries, reports the BBC.
Some 650 pubs were asked for the cost of their cheapest pint of bitter by researchers for the Good Pub Guide.
They found that this pint cost £3.15 on average in the south-east of England and London, but £2.87 in Yorkshire and the North.
Campaigners say that overheads faced by pubs could explain the difference.
Rates and rents were often higher for London publicans and that could be reflected in the cost of a drink, said Tony Jerome, spokesman for the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra).

Sheffield Pub Owner Disadvantage By Planning Laws
The owner of a Sheffield pub has accused the council of operating an unfair planning policy – after councillors refused to allow him to extend opening times to match those of his competitors.
Kane Yeardley, who reopened The York in Broomhill a year ago as a pub and restaurant, wants to stay open an hour later each night – until 12.30am in the week, and 1.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.
His staff have to call last orders before competitors The Broomhill Tavern round the corner, and The Fox and Duck on the same street.
Before Mr Yeardley’s company Forum Cafe Bars Ltd bought The York, the pub served until the same time as the other pubs in Broomhill.
But when he originally applied to revamp the pub, officers took the opportunity to rein in opening hours.
Now a meeting of the city centre, south and east planning board has refused his application to extend the hours.

Cambridge Pub Redevelopment Plans Agreed
The bell has tolled for a Cambridge pub after the city council approved its demolition.
Former mayor Cllr Rob Dryden said the city could turn into a “Quaker town” because of the loss of pubs after he fought the plans.
“We are losing so many pubs in Cambridge that it will be like a Quaker town.”
The demolition was also fought by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra). In a report to the city council’s south area committee, the organisation says: “Although the pub has not been managed well in recent times, there is no reason to suggest that it could not be, providing a valuable facility to the local community.”
There will be four terraced homes and two semi-detached properties, with parking to the rear. The homes proposed are two-storey buildings and the pub car park will be “improved”.

Premier League V Plymouth Pub Landlady Result; Premier League loses decoder case
A pub landlady has won the latest stage of her fight to air Premier League games using a foreign TV decoder, reports the BBC. Karen Murphy had to pay nearly £8,000 in fines and costs for using a cheaper Greek decoder in her Portsmouth pub to bypass controls over match screening. But she took her case to the European Court of Justice.
The ECJ now says national laws which prohibit the import, sale or use of foreign decoder cards are contrary to the freedom to provide services. The decision could trigger a major shake-up for the Premier League and its current exclusive agreements with Sky Sports and ESPN.
"In practical terms, the Premier League will now have to decide how it wishes to re-tender its rights," said sports media lawyer Daniel Geey of Field Fisher Waterhouse solicitors."There can be little doubt it will have contingency plans ready to go and has various options available.
"Be it a pan-EU tender, selling in only certain EU member states or devising a plan to start its own channel, they will be deciding how best to maximise the value of their product to ensure any revenue shortfall is minimised."

New Smoking Law Bans Cigarette Machines
In a bid to tackle underage smoking in the UK, vending machines selling cigarettes in bars and restaurants will be illegal.
Cigarette vending machines will be banned from all public areas of pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants under a new law which comes into play on Saturday.
The move from the Department of Health (DoH) is a bid to stop underage smoking in the UK, as it is estimated 46,000 children aged between 11 and 15 years old use the machines to buy tobacco.
However, pubs will still be able to sell cigarettes and tobacco from behind the bar after carrying out proof of age checks.
