UK Pub Visits Decline by 20%

Pub visits over recent months have fallen by almost 20 per cent compared to last year, with the average UK consumer going to the pub four times a month rather than five times.

The average spend per visit has also fallen by almost a fifth to £15.08.

Nightclubs have fared even worse than pubs. The number of visits to clubs has fallen by over a third compared to last year. Restaurants have also seen the number of visitors fall, but only by 8 per cent.

The findings are contained in the Leisure Wallet Report by Zolfo Cooper, the financial advisory firm. The company said that rising taxes, falling disposable incomes and concerns over job security are to blame for the drop-off in visits.

Despite the overall decline in spending, certain parts of the UK are proving to be more resilient than others. For example the proportion of the population drinking in pubs has fallen by 12 per cent in the North-East, but risen by 7 per cent in the South-East.

Mr Hemming said: “The situation varies across the country. We continue to see the resilience of London.”

Pub Trade Hit By Riots

In the aftermath on the country's worst riots in decades many businesses are counting the true cost of the week's events.

As city centers became no go zones many pubs either chose to or on the advice of the police close their establishments in fear of safety of their staff and property. With pubs unable to trade, the loss of invaluable income will be the final nail in the coffin of many drinking holes.

JD Wetherspoon temporarily closed 15-20 pubs in south and south east London following a night of rioting which saw their Great Harry pub in Woolwich completely destroyed.

The pub was ransacked and set alight by rioters and was completely destroyed but fortunately no-one was injured.

In Stockport, Cheshire the Cherry Trees was set alight and unfortunately couldn't be saved.

Publican David Lee was devastated to see the business that he's struggles to make a go of destroyed in minutes. The last thing the industry needed was to lose revenue in this already crippling time. A number of staff will now be made unemployed.

There were no reports of pubs in the South West being affected.

RICS Construction Market Survey

The number of new build properties backed by the private sector continues to boost growth in the construction sector, while spending cuts still take their toll on public sector building.

This is the finding from the latest Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Construction Market Survey, which revealed that construction of public sector housing declined in the three months to June this year.
