Pubco News; Punch aims for largest pub quiz in the country

To help its Partners drive sales at quiet trading times, Punch has launched a national pub quiz competition that it aims to make the largest of its kind in the country.

With a total grand final prize fund of £6,400, Punch is encouraging as many of its Partners as possible to get involved and drive trade at their pubs with free weekly quiz nights.

Over 400 Partners have already registered and begun an eight week rolling programme. As well as the free 50-question quizzes, Partners are also provided with a full briefing pack, free posters and money off drinks tokens to help them promote the events and encourage customer loyalty.

Stephen Martin, marketing manager at Punch says: “A quiz is a really simple way for pubs to boost trade at traditionally quieter times. We’re able to use our scale to put together a quiz package for Partners that’s completely free and can help them bring in new trade.”

Each week, quiz teams receive points depending on how successful they have been. After the eight week cycle, the winning team, with the best six scores, will go through to represent their pub at the regional finals taking place in July and August.

The regionals will be hosted by Redtooth, utilising a full PA system and TVs in larger Punch outlets and the top two teams from each regional final then go through to the national event, hosted by Redtooth and a celebrity quiz master on 11th September.

The overall national winner will receive £2,000 plus trophies and a special ‘money can’t buy prize’ in the form of a quiz fully set up at their pub and a celebrity quiz team to play on a night of their choice. And runners up also receive a range of cash prizes.

JD Wetherspoon Profits Fall

Pub mega-chain JD Wetherspoon has seen its profits fall by 11 per cent, a result that the group has blamed on “increasing taxes and regulation.”

The chain’s results were doubly disappointing because its half-year sales actually rose by 7.6 per cent, bringing them to a record high of £525.4 million.

The group also saw total sales in the six weeks preceding 6 March increase by 7.9 per cent. Like-for-like sales, which do not count sales in new venues, increased by 2.8 per cent.

JD Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin blamed the results on a “pernicious combination of increasing taxes and regulation.”

He said: “Britain has now become a high tax and regulation environment for business, with the effects of this being seen in many thousands of pubs and other small businesses across Britain.”

While the impact of alcohol duty has been felt by independent pubs, publican groups have pointed to the tie between landlord and pubco as one of the major factors affecting closure rates.

The Chancellor has been urged not to increase alcohol duty during this month’s Budget announcement.

UK Pubs News; April Boost, but no Easter Bonus for Eating and Drinking-out

Britain went on holiday in April, and while the nation’s pubs and restaurants are confidently predicting a positive bounce in sales for the month, boosted not least by the Royal Wedding, Easter weekend trading was actually down on the corresponding four-day Easter weekend last year.

Figures from the Coffer Peach Business Tracker, which monitored sales performance across 17 leading pub and restaurant operators over the period, show combined like-for-like sales for the four days of Good Friday to Easter Monday down –6.5% on the 2010 Easter weekend, while total sales were –3.7% – results which highlight the complexity of forecasting consumer spending patterns.

“But the Easter effect is interesting. Last year, the long weekend off was right at the start of the month and the weather was wet; this year it was at the end of April and it was hot. Last year, it was also in the middle of school holidays, this year some children had gone back to school before Easter.

“Last year, it rained and many people went shopping especially to malls, and to inside entertainment like the cinema, benefiting restaurants in those locations. Hot weather, as we had this year, tends to favour pubs, especially those with outside areas, rather than restaurants - but when it gets really sunny many people simply stay at home and get out the barbecue. It can be a double-edged sword.”

Waitrose, for example, recorded its biggest ever Easter Saturday sales this year, driven largely by stay-at-home barbecue parties, with trading up 15% on the same day last year, and overall Easter revenues ahead10.6%. Commercial director Mark Williamson is quoted as saying: “Alfresco dining saw sales of table stationery grow by 48% on last year, with napkins up 100%, table covers up 115% and plastic champagne flutes up 150%.

Tax on Supermarket Alcohol Should Help Pubs

The Government should raise taxes on “cheap booze” sold in supermarkets to pay for a tax cut on alcohol in pubs, Conservative MP Gary Streeter has said;“Given the importance of the licensed trade to the economy and our culture, particularly in regions like the West Country where tourism is so high, isn’t it time we sought to reduce alcohol duty on served drinks and increase it on cheap booze sold by supermarkets?”

The Government has announced plans to stop alcohol being sold for less than it costs to produce. But critics pointed out that most alcohol was already more expensive in supermarkets than cost price, meaning the proposal would have little practical effect.

Community Right to Buy Scheme Faces Criticism

The private property industry has signalled its opposition to the ‘Right to Buy’ proposals contained in the Localism Bill and has implored the government to insert “safeguards” to stop communities making vexatious claims on properties, reports the Civil Society.

In its submission to the consultation on the scheme, the British Property Federation has recommended that any community group wishing to buy a community asset should have to prove its ability to raise the finance, before the local authority adds the property to its list of nominated properties.

The Community Right to Buy concept is intended to give community groups and other civil society organisations (CSOs) the power to nominate a piece of land or building to be listed with the local authority, and then be given time to prepare a bid to buy it if the owner wants to sell it. The Department for Communities and Local Government, which is sponsoring the Bill, hopes the legislation will help to save local community services from closure and also bring empty buildings back into use.

The National Council of Voluntary Organisations NCVO has recommended to government that the sector should be given first right of refusal over any such property, ahead of prospective private-sector buyers.

But the response submitted by the BPF indicates that it may not be willing to accept the proposals without a fight. It suggests that the scheme will do little to save local services such as post offices and pubs from closure, and could even be “hijacked” to stifle development and economic growth.

CAMRA Object to Pub Redevelopment in Malvern

Members of real ale group CAMRA will be looking closely at new plans which would mean the permanent loss of a pub in Malvern.

A development company has applied to Malvern Hills District Council to convert the Vaults at Link Top into housing.

The Vaults, at 102 Worcester Road, has been closed since January, when landlord Karl Crangle shut the business, claiming he had been made a scapegoat for problems with drinking and anti-social behaviour in the area.

Goldhall Developments Ltd has applied to convert the pub area into a two-bedroom apartment. There is already planning permission, issued in 2006 and renewed in 2010, to build four apartments in the pub's garden.

In a statement accompanying the application, David Hill of Goldhall Developments says: "The property has not traded as a normal public house for several years, but was trading as a nightclub.

"We submit that use as a residential building will improve the amenity of the area, reduce noise and inconvenience, reduce police workload, improve neighbourhood relations, improve property values in the immediate vicinity and be a general improvement to Link Top."
