Youth hostelling franchise targets Liverpool pubs in expansion drive
LIVERPOOL has been targeted in the expansion plans of a London youth hostel franchise that breathes new life into run-down pubs by creating accommodation dormitories.
Bermondsey-based Journeys installs scores of its micro-cell bunk beds for hostellers who can boost landlords’ food and drink takings through their added custom.
Journeys currently has three London sites and one in Brighton, all in former pubs, and has identified two key locations in Liverpool as part of its growth plans to open a further 15 hostels during 2011.
Director Derek Bodman said: “We are now in talks with the current owners to take things further in respect to Journeys hostels.
“Both of these have potential to create new hostels with bed capacities of 250-300.
“They also have a long list of applicants who are interested in being the franchisees for these sites, and managing the hostels if the bids are successful.”

Guernsey Pub Given Planning for Demolition
The Guernsey parish of St Saviour will not have its only pub reopened, after permission was given to demolish it, reports the BBC.
Campaigners had called for St Saviour's Tavern, nicknamed "The Ritz", to be reopened since its closure in 2007.
Instead, planners decided at an open meeting on Tuesday to allow St Saviours Landholders Ltd to build three new flats, new gates and a 1.8m (6ft) wall.

Britons Bought 60.2 Million Fewer Beer Pints in First Quarter
Bloomburg reports that U.K. drinkers bought 60.2 million fewer pints of beer in the first three months of 2011 as they cut back spending in shops and supermarkets, according to an industry group.
Beer purchases fell 3.8 percent to 5.32 million barrels from 5.52 million a year earlier, the British Beer and Pub Association said in an e-mailed statement. A barrel holds 164 liters of beer, or 288 pints, according to the London-based BBPA.
Sales in the “on-trade,” or in pubs and bars, slid 3.8 percent, the same rate of decline as at supermarkets and shops, or the “off-trade,” the BBPA said. On-trade sales declined at a slower pace than last year’s 8.8 percent decline, whereas shop sales fell from a 0.9 percent increase last year.
Beer sales “are still fragile,” Brigid Simmonds, the BBPA’s chief executive officer, said in the statement. Second- quarter sales may be helped by public holidays, including for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and sunny weather, the BBPA said, even as beer prices rise due to a tax increase levied in this year’s U.K. budget.
The BBPA represents the U.K. brewing and pub industry. Its members account for 96 percent of the beer brewed in the country and nearly two-thirds of Britain’s 52,500 pubs, it said.

There are 300,000 Additional Adult Drinkers in Britain Every Year
The total number of adult drinkers in Britain has increased by about 300,000 every year, according to new analysis published in the Wilson Drinks Report ("WDR") Annual Review of 2010. But total volumes of alcohol consumed over the same period decreased for all the major categories except cider.
The analysis used the latest UK mid-year population estimates from the Office for National Statistics ("ONS") and research carried out by YouGov for WDR, which measured the % of non-drinkers in Britain every month during 2010.
Tim Wilson, managing director of the Wilson Drinks Report, commented : "Most of us are very aware that the UK population has been steadily increasing over the last few years. What is particularly interesting is when you work out how many additional adult drinkers there are each year.
We have extracted the total number of additional British adults from the ONS data, and then applied our estimate of the proportion of adults who don't drink (ie 17%).
We calculate that the total number of British adult drinkers has increased by about 300,000 every year between 2004-05 and 2008-09."
Wilson added : "In our view, most industry pundits and lobbyists fail to take into account this increase in the total population of adult drinkers when analysing the amount of alcohol consumed in Britain. If the number of drinkers is increasing by nearly 1% every year, you might expect the total volume of alcohol consumed to also increase by the same amount, which it is clearly not.
According to HMRC data, between 2004-05 and 2008-09, beer volumes decreased by 16%, wine volumes decreased by 1% and spirits volumes decreased by 7%. Only cider volumes were up over this 5 year period (up 40%)."

Red Wine Drinkers Could Provide the Key to Saving Pubs, Bars and Restaurants
Red wine drinkers spend £17.68 each time they go out, more than any other type of drinker, according to new research published by the Wilson Drinks Report (“WDR”). The results are based on research carried out by YouGov for WDR A total of 5,432 British adult drinkers took part in online omnibus panels between September and November 2010.
Tim Wilson, managing director of the Wilson Drinks Report commented : “Whilst our analysis shows that wine drinkers tend to go out less than lager or bitter drinkers, wine drinkers do spend the most each time they go out.
The trick for pub, bar and restaurant owners is to encourage wine drinkers to go out more often and to make sure they maintain their average spend per trip.“Lager (£56) and bitter (£54) drinkers tend to spend the most going out each month. But they also goout far more than other types of drinker, which brings their average spend per trip down.
The research in WDR also analyses who mostly drinks at home or at a friend’s house. Most likely to drink at home are red wine drinkers (86%), least likely are bitter drinkers (39%).

Fitzrovia Pub Crawl
Journalist and author Mike Pentelow successfully completed his marathon pub crawl of Fitzrovia’s 46 pubs. Over six days from Monday 28 March to Saturday 2 April, Mike and friends visited every single one of Fitzrovia’s public houses, reports the Fitrovia News Blog.
Starting at the Green Man on Euston Road, the oldest Pub in Fitzrovia, and finishing in The Tottenham, the only remaining pub on Oxford Street. Mike also produced a guide to all the pubs which was published in Fitzrovia News.
One of the pubs due to be visited — The Albany — was actually closed for refurbishment so had to be missed. Instead Mike and friends ventured into an extra pub, the Dover Castle in Weymouth Mews, Marylebone.
At one time there were many more pubs than there are today in Fitzrovia. Over the decades, many of Fitzrovia’s pubs have closed. One of these the Bromley Arms in Cleveland Street still has its facade but is now an office. The Black Horse in Rathbone Place closed last year after its owners sold it. A planning application to convert it to a hamburger restaurant is expected soon and there are plans for the upstairs accommodation to be converted to flats.
The decline of pubs has been blamed on a number of factors. Partly because of changing drinking habits. There has been an increase in the consumption of wine and many people now drink at home after buying cheap booze from supermarkets.
Many people would not consider visiting a pub because of religious and other reasons. But public houses are also seen as an important part of social life. The Institute of Public Policy Research in a 2009 report found that people regarded pubs as a very important meeting people and socialising.

London Pub Public Health Risk
The George Pub on Haverstock Hill, next door to the Royal Free, was shut down earlier this month after Camden Council health and safety officers found it was over-run by rodents.
Inspectors described the infestation as “severe and chronic” and described the bar, which serves food and drink, as “an imminent risk to public health”.
The pub re-opened last week after officers said they were satisfied the mouse problem had been dealt with. But the venue was still ordered to pay £1,600 in costs to Camden Council at a hearing at Highbury Magistrates Court last Thursday.
Richard Maxwell, a Belsize resident and a regular at the pub, said he was disgusted at the thought of mice scampering around while he was enjoying a pint.
He said: “It’s a good pub to watch the football in, but having mice will certainly put me off. I wouldn’t go again until they get the mice sorted out.”
Hampstead councillor Linda Chung was also shocked by The George’s poor hygiene standards and said she hoped they never sunk so low again.

Beer Sales Down from 2002 Peak
Beer sales in British pubs are down nearly 40 percent from their heyday a decade ago, according to the GMB union, reports Euroslot.
It argues that the 38.9 decrease from 2002’s peak reflects pub closures caused by property companies setting rents too high.
The British Beer and Pub Association says that 1300 pubs closed across Britain during 2010, leading to 13,000 job losses and knock-on effects on sectors such as gaming.
Meanwhile, Luminar – the country’s biggest nightclub firm and owner of brands such as Oceana and Liquid – has reported plummeting like-for-like sales in the year ending 26 February. They fell 18.6 percent, it says, a blow that some have blamed on unemployment among the nightclubs’ young patrons.
