London Underground Pubs

A London entrepreneur is attempting to secure funds to reopen disused underground stations for a variety of businesses including pubs and bars, reports the Morning Advertiser. Ajit Chambers, the businessman behind the scheme, believes the forgotten stations and tunnels can be revitalised by opening up new businesses.

Chambers, who has set up The Old London Underground Company, is confident of raising the money for the refurbishment of 26 disused stations.

The idea also has the blessing of Mayor of London Boris Johnson, who said: “This guy has a brilliant plan to open up disused underground stations. My pledge to you is that we will do it if it doesn’t cost a penny of tax payers’ money.”

Stations that could be reopened for businesses include Aldwych, which opened in 1907 and is commonly used for filming; South Kentish Town, which has been closed since 1924 and already hosts a sauna and massage parlour; and Euston, which is still a working station, but with a network of closed off tunnels, platforms and a ticket hall deep underground.

Royal Wedding Parliamentary Order For Late Night Opening

Pubs and restaurants are just one step away from getting the automatic right to open later during the royal wedding after MPs approved the plan.

MPs voted in favour of the proposal yesterday, meaning the green light will be given if the move also gets the backing from peers when they vote on 29 March.

The Parliamentary order would give pubs, restaurants and village halls the automatic right to open until 1am on Saturday 30 April — following the wedding on the Friday — and 1am on Sunday 1 May.

The rights would extend to hosting live music and other “regulated entertainment”, as well as hot food and drink for consumption on-site after 11pm.

Supermarkets wouldn’t benefit because the order relates to the on-trade only.
The Government said the move will mean pubs avoid the burden and expense of applying for a temporary events notice, which costs £21.

The move follows a two-week public consultation.

Marstons Brewery and Pubco Report Encouraging

Marston’s, based in Burton-upon-Trent, has seen an ‘encouraging and robust’ performance in its sales in the 23 weeks leading up to March 12.

The group, said that performance in its managed arm was driven by a 4.7 per cent increase in like for like food sales and like for like wet sales growth of 1.5 per cent.

In a trading update, the group said that comparable sales in the past seven weeks were three per cent ahead of last year.Operating margin is also slightly ahead of last year.

At the company’s tenanted and leased pub arm, like-for-like profits were estimated to be 0.1 per cent ahead of last year, which compares favourably to the four per cent decline in the financial year 2010.

The company said this improvement in performance was primarily due ‘to the continuing successful rollout of the franchise- style Retail Agreement, which will be operating in around 190 pubs by the half-year’.

Pub And Beers Vital Role in UK Communities

The Cities of London & Westminster is the Parliamentary constituency with the most pub based jobs in Britain, and the Suffolk constituency of Bury St Edmunds has the most brewing related employment. The study, by economy experts Oxford Economics for the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), shows the vital role the industry plays in every corner of Britain.

The BBPA says that with so many local jobs depending on the trade in every community in Britain, the Government must think again about plans for a huge, seven per cent rise in Beer Tax in the Budget next week, which would damage the local economy and cause more local pubs to close.

This snapshot forms part of a huge new survey released today, which show the impact on jobs, wages, and the economy of Britain's brewing and pub trade, with information for every Parliamentary constituency in Britain.

In the Cities of London & Westminster, which covers the heart of the capital's entertainment district, over 11,000 jobs dependent on the pub trade. In the brewing county of Suffolk, 2,200 jobs depend on brewing in the Bury St Edmonds constituency.

Nationwide, the figures show that:
• 980,000 people in the UK depend on beer and pubs for work
• The beer and pub trade adds over £21 billion to the UK economy every year
• £13.4 billion in UK wages are dependent on the trade, each year

JD Wetherspoon Post Record Half Yearly Sales Figures

Profits at pub group JD Wetherspoon fell as chairman Tim Martin warned of the impact of a "pernicious combination of increasing taxes and regulation".

Despite posting record half-year sales up 7.6% to £525.4m, Wetherspoon's pre-tax profits fell 11% to £32.2m.

The operating margin fell from 10% to 9.4%, with Mr Martin blaming higher energy, food, labour and tax costs.

Trading in the six weeks to 6 March had also seen like-for-like sales up 2.8% and total sales up 7.9%.

But Mr Martin said the business environment was increasingly tough.

"Britain has now become a high tax and regulation environment for business, with the effects of this being seen in many thousands of closed pubs and other small businesses across Britain, as well as a marked increase in unemployment, " he said.

During the six months 14 Wetherspoon pubs opened and two closed, leaving the group with 787 outlets.

The dividend for the six months is 4 pence.

Pub Gift Voucher Scheme Extends to Scotland

Pub Tokens is the idea of former Scottish & Newcastle director Andrew Stevenson and Dominic Lavan, reports the Morning Advertiser.People can log into the company’s website and buy £10 and £20 vouchers that can be redeemed against food, drink or accommodation at participating pubs. The scheme started in November 2009 and, so far, around 1,100 outlets in England and Wales have signed up.

However, the launch has provoked criticisim from health campaigners who expressed fears over whether the vouchers would encourage excessive drinking because they did not give change to customers.

“A lot of gift vouchers don’t give change. Also, you can get gift tokens for most supermarkets and they don’t say you can buy alcoholic drinks with them,” said Lavan.

Paul Waterson, chief executive of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association, said: “Generally, we are supportive of the scheme — it is a good idea and helps pubs. There are so many problems associated with off-sales and drinking at home, so it is very short-sighted to blame pubs for the problem of binge drinking.”

Waterson said the possibility of binge drinking as a result of the voucher scheme was slight because most licensees acted responsibly.

Beers give UK Exports a Boost

Beers give UK exports a boost, as drinkers flock to iconic British brews

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has put the future of the British brewing industry at the heart of its submission to chancellor George Osborne ahead of this month’s Budget.
The BBPA is leading the industry’s lobbying of the chancellor, highlighting the fact that latest data shows total UK alcohol consumption is lower than it was 10 years ago and action is required to protect the British brewing industry.

According to the BBPA, the figures also show a trend away from lower-strength drinks such as beer towards stronger drinks. Beer producers say that after over a decade of unfavourable tax treatment for beer, the new consumption figures add to the case for the government to end the beer duty escalator, and freeze beer duty in the 23 March Budget.

The BBPA also says that when it comes to this week’s call from the chancellor for policies that support UK manufacturing, “he could hardly pick a better place to start than Britain’s brewing industry, with its unique variety of British-based products.”

Punch Taverns Support Pub Theme Nights

Punch Partnerships’ managing director Roger Whiteside got a flavour of how to deliver a great pub curry at a special training session for Punch Partners in Burton.

Roger joined 13 Partners from nine Punch pubs across the Midlands, who attended the free session, organised by operations manager Mick Howard, about putting on a successful themed curry night at Punch’s purpose built food development kitchen at its Burton headquarters.

Roger Whiteside added: “This is such a simple but effective idea. Themed nights are increasingly popular, so we thought why not use the purpose built facilities at our support centre to train up our local Partners. This is the second session that we’ve run here and the feedback has been fantastic so I thought I’d join in to find out how it’s done. It was also a great opportunity to talk to some of our local Partners about trading.”

Change of Use News: Bolton pub 'to be turned into community centre'

A former pub could undergo a change of use and be transformed into a community centre.

The Bolton News reports that the Church Inn in Deane, could be refurbished by the Heaton Unity Association (HUA) charity and eventually host a library, classrooms and a computer area.

A spokesman for the HUA wrote in the planning application: "The centre would provide a drop-in facility for careers advice. People can get help with online job search, job applications and with general information technology access.

"We have enthusiastic volunteers, many of them professionals from all walks of life, but we are unable to tap into this vital resource due to the continual hurdles we face in the way of a suitable location to base our activities," the application explained.

Councillor Robert Allen of Bolton Council told the newspaper that the proposals sound good.

"Pubs are closing everywhere every day and if this one hasn't worked, it makes sense to change it rather than have a derelict building," he added.
