A new report by leading economic experts Oxford Economics shows that 980,000 jobs in the UK depend on the beer and pub trade. The British Beer & Pub Association which commissioned the report, says the figures will fuel concerns over plans for huge beer tax hikes in the Budget next month.
The Oxford Economics report, which also provides a breakdown of jobs, wages and value added by UK region, shows for the first time that:
• 980,000 people in the UK depend on beer and pubs for work
• The beer and pub trade adds over £21 billion to the UK economy every year
• £13.4 billion in UK wages are dependent on the trade, each year

UK Pubs Given Guidance on Fake ID's
New posters warning young people of the risks of using fake ID and guidance to help door staff and those selling alcohol to spot false documents and know what to do once they have confiscated them, have been published by the Home Office today.
Home Office Minister for Crime Prevention James Brokenshire said:
"Selling alcohol to underage people can have serious consequences for them and for businesses and can lead to premises being shut down. We know the majority of premises are very responsible but many have told us that they are often unsure of how to deal with the use of fake or borrowed ID.
"The government recently introduced new measures to tackle premises that persistently sell alcohol to children in the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill, but we also recognise that the misuse of ID can be problematic for businesses.

Change of Use News: Lincoln pub to be turned into flats
A former pub is set to undergo a change of use and be developed into a block of flats.
The disused Monks Abbey pub in Lincoln has obtained planning permission to be transformed into four flats, which will then be let out to students when construction is complete, the Lincolnshire Echo reports.
Andrew Wilding, planning agent for the site, said in his application that a decline in trade made it difficult to find an alternative use for the building.
"It is big enough to make a generous family home, but the area is too noisy and full of traffic fumes," he pointed out.
"The lack of reasonable car parking precludes the use as offices, while the present economic difficulties make it unlikely anyone would want the premises for retail."
He said this particular area of Lincoln appears to be flourishing, so the building could do well to contain two four-bedroom flats, one three-bed apartment and a two-bed flat.

Pub Landlord Fired after Traveller Ban
A landlord who put up posters banning travellers from his Cambridge pub has been sacked and the venue is now closed.
Travellers in the region were appalled when the signs were put up on the main entrance doors of The Grove in Arbury Road, Arbury, stating: “No travellers your (sic) still barred.”
The closure of the pub means Arbury residents now have no local pub, with the nearest being the Jenny Wren in St Kilda Avenue. The Carlton Arms, in Carlton Way, is still closed following the fire that gutted it last year.
The Grove’s signs were criticised as being “racist” and “disgusting”. A member of the travelling community, who wished to remain anonymous, took pictures of them over the weekend and said they were taken down after he was spotted.

Change of Use News: Disused pub transformed into health centre
An old pub site has undergone a change of use and is set to be transformed into affordable housing.
The derelict Willows pub site has just been given planning permission to have 22 new homes built on it.
Situated near Morpeth, the property investment will be funded by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and developed by Two Castles housing association.
Each of the new homes will be the first in Northumberland to achieve level four of the government's Code for Sustainable Homes.
Alan Davies, investment and regeneration manager at the HCA, commented: "With a range of eco-friendly features, including energy-efficient solar panels, compost bins and cycle storage, the new homes will be a step up for greener living in Northumberland."
The news comes as the HCA announced a £2.4 million investment into a change of use development in Stockport, in which a former brewery is set to be redeveloped into an affordable housing programme.

Thousands of Australian pub and club goers are being forced to submit to fingerprint and photographic scans to enter popular venues, seemingly unaware of the ramifications of handing over their identity.
Biometric scanners are flooding Australia's pub market as the fix-all solution to violence and antisocial behaviour. The pubs are exerting more power than the police or airport security by demanding photos, fingerprints and ID. Police can only do it if they suspect someone of committing a crime and they must destroy the data if the person is not charged or found not guilty.
Yet one company boasts that the sensitive information collected about patrons can be kept for years and shared with other venues in the country - in what appears to be a breach of privacy laws.
There are no official checks and balances on how the data is collected, stored, used or shared. Federal Privacy Commissioner Tim Pilgrim has warned he does not have the power to audit the systems and the lack of regulation has even industry players calling for tighter controls.
