Pubs Gear up for Royal Weddding
Government confirms extra Bank Holiday as Wills and Kate's wedding date is announced, reports the Publican.
The pub industry could be in for a bumper Easter after the date of next year’s Royal wedding was announced.
Prince William will marry Kate Middleton on April 29 – a Friday – at Westminster Abbey in London.
This means the on-trade could take advantage of two bank Holiday weekends after the government confirmed today that Monday, May 2, would be a national holiday as part of the country’s celebration of the couple’s nuptials.
Kate Nichols of the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers said: “I think potentially bumper trading period for the trade and one to gear up for.

Pub Grub More Popular than Beer
British pubs are more popular for their food offerings than booze for the first time, according to new figures from Mintel.
The research agency found that 72% of Britons visited their local for its food menu compared to the 63% who went to the pub for a drink.
Pubs were enticing diners from restaurants because they offered a more relaxed dining atmosphere, said Helen Spicer, senior food analyst at Mintel.
“Pub food has had to adapt and now bar snacks and menus have become more variable from value ranges to more upmarket offerings,” she said. “For some venues, catering has become more important than serving a pint.”

London Pub Landlords Pressure to Deal With Children
Growing numbers of landlords renting a pub in London and elsewhere in the country are struggling to cope with the contentious issue of letting children on licensed premises, it has been reported.
Under the law, landlords are allowed to let children of all ages into their pubs, so long as they are with their parents or other responsible adults and provided they adhere to the rules on drinking age limits.
And, while this may be good for some businesses, others are having a hard time finding a balance between keeping older regulars happy and cashing in on the growing demand for family meals, the BBC has reported.
Citing research carried out by the Good Pub Guide, the broadcaster has revealed that growing numbers of landlords are having to deal with unruly children on their premises and some even have to face aggressive parents when asking them to keep their loud youngsters quiet.
Speaking to the BBC, one landlord explained that, though he doesn't "hate" children, his customers are keen to enjoy an adults-only atmosphere, though he acknowledges that he could be missing out on increased revenues.
Meanwhile, landlords renting pubs in London are to be given the chance to stock popular Spanish beer Mahou 5 Estrellas after Carlsberg reached a deal to import the drink.

London Pub Landlords Have New Perspective
A planned sell-off of properties by Mitchell & Butlers (M&B) is set to open up a range of new opportunities for investors looking into the possibility of renting a pub in London.
Coming as the firm continues with its plans to move away from drinks-oriented establishments and concentrate its efforts on dining-centric venues, it has confirmed that it is to put 53 pubs on the market.
As well as offering the assets to their existing tenants to buy, the Independent reported that M&B will also be looking to sell them off to a range of other investors, potentially spelling good news for anyone thinking of renting a pub in London or elsewhere in the country.
Speaking to the newspaper, a source within the hospitality industry explained that a number of prime properties, including several with no obvious branding, are set to come onto the market in the coming weeks.
"These are rather large, rather nice, rather interesting pubs," the insider noted.
This comes soon after Bloomsbury Leisure Group outlined its plans to open a unique beer house in a historic property in the grounds of Euston Station to the Publican.

London Pubs Role to Play in Olympics 2012
The Morning Advertiser is reporting that a leading licensing solicitor has urged the Government to relax opening times for London pubs during the 2012 Olympics.
Jeremy Allen of Popplesten Allen said that it would make sense for the Government to make the order as soon as possible. The culture secretary can make a Licensing Hours Order to relax opening hours for occasions considered to be "of exceptional international, national or local significance".
The Publican reports that London Pubs are being urged by Boris Johnson to do their bit to help tourists feel at home when the Olympic Games roll into town in 2012.
Mayor of London has already started recruiting ambassadors to greet the hundreds of thousands of visitors set to arrive in the UK for the Olympics and Paralympics.London hostelries are to be key a recruiting ground with Johnson looking for locals to help guide visitors to key attractions – and pubs.
To support the bid pubs are being encouraged to take part in a poster campaign calling on customers to get involved.

'Pretend' Drunks Catch Out Pubs
Trading Standards said the majority of pubs still served their fake drunks, reports the BBC
Of 49 pubs visited in Conwy and Denbighshire, only seven refused to serve the pretend drunkards.
The volunteers pretended to be so inebriated they fell into tables, carried bottles out of bars and slurred their words.
One was dressed to resemble Frank Gallagher, the often-drunk character in Channel Four drama Shameless.
Serving alcohol to intoxicated people on a licensed premise is a criminal offence.
Roly Schwarz, community safety enforcement manager for both authority areas, said they used three professional witnesses to act out the drunken display as all the tradings standards officers are so well known in the area.

Drinking At Home on the Increase
The Morning Advertiser commissioned a survey of 500 drinkers in the 18 to 24 age bracket, unveiled at the Responsible Drinks Retailing conference yesterday. The survey shows the frequency of home-drinking and the sharp decline in the traditional weekend night out was reported by Paul Charity in the MA.
A total of 70% of all alcohol consumed by this group is bought in the off-trade — and only just over one in three young drinkers buy their first alcohol in a pub.Pre-loading is rife. Every single person surveyed had a drink at home before going out. On average, young drinkers are imbibing at home between once or twice a week, averaging 3.3 drinks each before they go out. More alarmingly, one in five young drinkers drink alcohol at home three times a week or more.

British Pub Week Supported By MP and Lords
Pro-pub MP Greg Mulholland hosted an event last night for MPs and Lords from all parties to raise awareness of British Pub Week (30 October to 6 November), reports the Morning Advertiser.
During the event at the Red Lion in Westminster MPs were asked to visit their local pub and show their support for the industry.
“The Save the Pub APPG has worked tirelessly to support the industry in what is a very difficult time and through events like this I hope my colleagues and I will raise the profile of pubs as vital community assets,” said Mulholland.
“I hope the British Pub Week Parliamentary event was a success and I will continue to work in my role as chair of the Save the Pub APPG to preserve this cultural institution which is the great British pub.”
Chair of British Pub Week Inez Ward added: “It is imperative that Parliamentarians understand the importance of the great British pub and we hope that last night’s event symbolises this.”
