Pub sector 'ties' cleared by Office of Fair Trading

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has confirmed it has found no evidence that so-called "beer ties" between pub firms and landlords are harming competition reports the BBC.

It had ruled in October last year that landlords being forced to buy beer from pub owners was not anti-competitive.

But it reopened the investigation in February after the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) lodged an appeal.

Big pub companies have always denied any wrongdoing. Camra says it is now considering a new appeal.

National Curry Week; Cobra urges pubs to aid curry sales

With Indian food one of the nation’s favourite meals, the lager brand believes that pubs offering a ‘curry and Cobra’ meal deal can boost food sales.

The promotion is part of the drive by Molson Coors, which formed a partnership with Cobra founder Lord Bilimoria last year, to expand sales of the brand outside its Indian restaurant heartland.

The pack also includes eight posters and designs for placemats and dripmats to advertise the pub’s curry menu.

Adrian Davey, managing director of the Cobra Beer Partnership, said: “Licensees can significantly increase their turnover by introducing a curry night or a regular curry deal on their menu.”

Cobra is official sponsor of National Curry Week 2010, which celebrates 200 years of Indian restaurants in the UK, and runs from 21 to 27 November.

Concern Over Lack of 'Free' Water in Guernsey Nightclub Reports the BBC

A Guernsey nightclub's refusal to serve tap water has raised concerns from the island's director of public health. The manager of the nightclub Folies D'Amour, Tony Le Marchant, said if someone needed it for medical reasons they would be happy to help.

He added the club was not obliged to offer free tap water, unlike the UK where pubs and clubs now have to provide it by law.Dr Stephen Bridgman said the situation in the island may have to change.

He said: "I was surprised to hear about that on Guernsey and concerned.

"To start with it will be raised in the joint meeting between the alcohol strategy and those who have liquor licences and hopefully we can put in place things that voluntarily mean people will supply tap water."

Drink-drive Limit Reduction will Impact on Rural Pubs

The Transport Committee are examining calls for a change in the drink driving laws, and are looking at a reduction of 80 to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The British Beer and Pub Association chief Brigid Simmonds said 70% of pub-goers still drive to their pubs.

Marston’s Beer Company managing director Stephen Oliver said a lower limit combined with “economic pressure could tip a number of pubs into a position where they effectively fail”.

In response to claims that more pubs now rely on food for profit, Oliver answered: “Food is very much an important part of what we offer, but there are still many pubs that rely on drink for turnover, including rural pubs.”

He said that lowering the limit would mean “consumers would think very carefully about going for a drink”.

Conversion Housing Plans for Bath Pub

Plans to convert a Bath pub into flats have provoked concern from two businessmen who wanted to keep it open.

Oldfield Park developer Richard Chapman has applied for permission to turn the Horseshoe at North Road into five flats, after completing the purchase of the building in August.

But there are claims that previous owner Admiral Taverns turned its back on solid interest from Bath firm Four County Inns, which also runs the Royal Oak in Lower Bristol Road.

The move comes as planning permission has been granted to turn the Brains Surgery pub at Larkhall into flats and as several other pubs in the city are up for sale.

Redeveloped London Pub to Open in Euston

Overseas property buyers in London are set to receive a warm welcome to the capital with the opening of a unique beer house at Euston Station.

Those considering renting a pub in London might be inspired by the plans to redevelop the Grade-II listed West Lodge, which is situated in the main square of the station, the Publican reports.

Opening next month, the Euston Tap will serve craft beers sourced from around the world.

Jonathan Dalton of Bloomsbury Leisure Group - the company behind the London property development scheme - told the news source: "Network Rail see it as a gateway to the station but were looking at having a Starbucks which would have been horrendous.

"Instead we will transform this beautiful building into a spectacular venue," he said, adding that the two-level Euston Tap will feature American-style beer taps on the back wall rather than in their traditional spot at the bar.

Meanwhile, plans for a high-speed rail link between Euston and Birmingham are under fire after residents of London's Primrose Hill raised concerns that their property prices could fall as a result of the development work.
