Pub closures blamed on consumer shift to ‘continental eating’

A new cafĂ© or restaurant will open for every pub or bar that closes over the next three years, as consumers adopt a more ‘European’ lifestyle, according to Big Hospitality.

According to independent market analyst Datamonitor, around 300 cafes and 1,900 restaurants are set to open by 2013, while the number of pubs and bars will diminish by 2,000.

The analyst believes the shift will come as a result of Britons adopting a more continental way of eating and drinking.

Great British Pub Awards 2010

Over 100 pubs from across the UK have been shortlisted for the Great British Pub Awards 2010, due to take place next month.

The finalists, spread across 16 categories including Community Pub of the Year and Cask Ale Pub of the Year, have all won a regional award within their category.

Now in their fifth year, the awards see the introduction of three new categories, Best Green Pub, Best Turnaround Pub and Best Poker Pub, helping the list to highlight the diversity of Britain’s pubs.

To reach the finals, pubs had to pass a paper judging round before a visit from an industry expert. The category winners, plus the Great British Pub of the Year 2010 will be announced on 9 September at a ceremony held at Hilton on Park Lane.

Pub Car Park Car Clamping Banned In Freedom Bill

Pubs will no longer be able to clamp or tow the cars of non-customers under new legislation to be introduced at the end of the year.

Wheel clamping and towing on private land in England and Wales will be banned as part of the Government’s Freedom Bill in November with “tough penalties” for anyone who attempts it.

David Beckham To Open a Pub in LA

David Beckham is apparently set to open a pub in Los Angeles called The Queen Vic- named after Posh Spice wife Victoria.

He is reportedly planning to run the pub with close friend TV chef Gordon Ramsay.There are a string of expats who live in Los Angeles who would be keen for somewhere to go with traditional ales and beer on tap as well as an English food menu.

A friend of Beckham's told the Daily Star newspaper: "He wants pie and mash, fish and chips and even chicken in a basket on the menu, just like the meals he eats when he's in the UK."
