Public Set to Avoid Pubs On New Year

The recession is forcing most people to stay at home on New Year's Eve after a year of cutting back on spending, new research has revealed. A survey of 2,000 adults by the Post Office showed more than two thirds were planning a night in, with most blaming a lack of money for not going out. Some of those questioned said they would prefer to be at home with their family, with only seven per cent definitely going to a pub or club to see in the New Year. – Press Association

Thousands of pub landlords are preparing a mutiny against suppliers in protest at the prices they pay for beer. The GMB union said it would ballot 25,000 'tied tenants' - licensees who buy exclusively from pub companies - about the possibility of industrial action. Britain's third-largest union says tied tenants pay premium rates for beer and will urge them to rebel by slashing the cost of a pint unless pub companies reduce their wholesale prices. – Daily Mail

'Music Makeover'; Live Music in UK Pubs

The BBPA is working with Performing Rights Society (PRS) on a new campaign to promote live music in pubs.

The ‘Music Makeover’ campaign will focus on the central role played by pubs in promoting live music and demonstrate the way that music can help pubs grow and maintain their business.

It is being launched via a competition to find two pubs in need of a ‘Music Makeover’. The BBPA will be working with PRS to identify one of the venues from amongst BBPA members’ pubs.

PRS for Music will be spending up to £5,000 on each pub, as well as giving them all the advice they need, including expert help from the Musicians’ Union and successful music pubs around the country. 45,000 pubs nationwide will be sent advice packs from PRS for Music in 2010, with an invite to follow the story of the Music Makeover pubs online.

The campaign was launched with the publication of new research, showing that featuring music boosts takings by 44 per cent, rising to 60 per cent at weekends.

11 London Pubs Closing Every Week

281 pubs closed there doors in London between January and June 2009 which is equivalent to eleven pubs every week, according to new figures for the capital issued today by the British Beer & Pub Association. The latest BBPA regional survey data for the capital shows in total, 281 pubs closed their doors for the last time, in the first half of 2009.

Other southern regions have also been hit by pub closures, with pub closures in the Meridian region at eight per week. Anglia region pub closures are four per week, and in the south west, the figure is three per week.

To reflect concern in London and the south over pub closures, regional pub leaders are meeting with MPs in the Red Lion pub in Westminster today (Thursday), to sign up to a new campaign, “I’m backing the pub” – calling on consumers, publicans, politicians and all who value the British beer and the British pub to sign up in support.

M & B Pub Group Battle for Control

British pub group, Mitchells and Butlers has complained to the Takeover and Mergers Panel claiming a number of its large shareholders are attempting to take control of the board. In a statement, Mitchells and Butlers said the actions of the Piedmont Investment Group (‘Piedmont’) threaten to undermine the independence and effectiveness of the Board ‘to advance the interests of a small group of shareholders’.

Representatives of Piedmont, the investment vehicle of billionaire Joe Lewis, which owns 23pc of M&B, will meet with the Takeover Panel today to defend themselves against the company’s allegation that they have been acting in concert with other major shareholders.

Under Panel rules, shareholders in a company must declare it if they are acting collectively. In this case, Piedmont denies that it has joined forces with Elpida, a vehicle controlled by the Irish racing magnates JP McManus and John Magnier which owns about 17pc of M&B.

M&B’s annual meeting is scheduled for next month.

Pubs for sale in South East of England

The British Beer & Pub Association estimates that four pubs are closing down every day and that the rate of pub closures is 14 times faster than in 2005. There are just over 57,000 pubs in Britain today, compared with 69,000 pubs in 1980.

Beer sales in UK pubs, relative to other outlets such as supermarkets and off licenses, have been falling for 30 years and according to the BBPA, beer sales over the bar are at their lowest since the Great Depression.

Pubs for Sale in the Midlands

As a property investment or development opportunity, run down freehold hotels and pubs are for sale at under market value and present excellent redevelopment, modernisation and refurbishment opportunities.

Recent price cuts caused by breweries and pub companies offloading their unprofitable, empty, struggling, run down or vacant pubs, are tempting entrepreneurs to look at the potential locked up in sites previously thought too expensive to run as a business or redevelop into offices, shops, care homes, restaurants, flats or apartments.

British Beer and Pub Association New Campaign Launch

The Beer and pub industry has set out a manifesto "The Life And Soul Of British Communities"

Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the BBPA, said “There is a clear and compelling public consensus amongst the British people that the pub is a vital part of their community and the social and economic character of Britain. This is coupled with deep concern at the record number of pub closures we are witnessing today and a resounding call for action to support the British pub.

•80 per cent of all people think that the pub is an important symbol of the British way of life

•71 per cent of people think that more needs to be done to support and promote the British pub.

•77 per cent think that pubs in Britain make a valuable contribution to the economy

•74 per cent of all people think that the planned increase in the tax on beer and pubs next March is not justified.

•67 per cent of all people agree that Government policy should encourage people to choose lower strength alcohol drinks like beer, and 74 per cent support a policy of lower taxation for lower strength drinks like beer.

“It is time for a concerted effort by government, industry and all those who value the pub to work together to adopt and implement policies to promote the great British pub."

The British Beer & Pub Association is the UK’s leading organisation representing the brewing and pub sector. Its members account for 98% of the beer brewed in the UK and own nearly two thirds of Britain’s 54,000 pubs.

250 New Pubs to Open in UK

Pubs chain JD Wetherspoon is to create 10,000 jobs as it opens 250 new pubs.
The company is planning to invest £250m on the new outlets over a five-year period.
The expansion will open up management opportunities, as well as positions for bar and kitchen staff.

The new pubs will be located across the UK, including Sheffield, Livingston, Leominster, Otley, New Malden, Liverpool and Newcastle

Pub Food Sale On The Rise

Despite the recession this year, the beer tax, the smoking ban, a poor summer and the ever present figure of 6 pubs a week closing down the Publicans Annual Food Report has reported that Pub food sales have remained stable.

Some 43% of pubs surveyed said that their food sales had even risen over the last year and 31% said that levels had stayed the same, compared to only 23% that reported a drop in food sales.

Competitive pricing and 2 for 1 promotions have made pub menus very competitive in the discount eating market and has enabled many publicans to keep their heads above the water in the most difficult times.

However, the report does not believe that the pub food industry should continue to lead the discount market, and advises Publicans to maintain their margins and not to be afraid to put up their prices. The so called 3 F's - females, families and over fifties should be the prime targets.

All in all the report considered that the industry should take its findings as good news for 2010.

Luton pubs may never pour another pint

A pair of permanently closed Luton pubs may never pour another pint after attracting strong interest from property developers.

The Britannia, in Biscot Road, and The Enterprise, in Elizabeth Street, are both on the market for £250,000 each, and property agent Paramount Investments have said that the sites are proving attractive to buyers wishing to convert the buildings into flats or shops.

Mark Greig, managing director of Paramount Investment, said: "Although we would like to see The Britannia and The Enterprise continue as going concerns, we have had recent interest from developers as they are in a planning class which means they can be converted into flats or other retail uses with minimal recourse to the planning authorities."

But he added that efforts to find a buyer to turn the properties back into pubs have not been abandoned.

"Falling property prices are creating tremendous bargains within the pub market for licensees who know they can respond to the challenges facing the modern trade."
