Preston Pilot Scheme for Teenage Pubs Slammed

A plan to create booze-free pubs for Preston teenagers has been slammed by alcohol campaigners. The city could soon be one of the first places in the country to turn empty pubs into alcohol-free premises, solely for the use of teenagers.

Partnership Projects Ltd, based in Cuerden Way, Bamber Bridge, are launching the pilot project, which bosses claim will help tackle underage drinking and anti-social behaviour.

The aim of the project is to create a healthy place for young people aged 13 to 19, promoting a healthy, crime-free lifestlye.

Pubs are set to open in Crewe, Cheshire, Merseyside and Nottingham in the next few months, and venues in central Lancashire "within a year."

But Alcohol Concern Chief Executive Don Shenker said: "Alcohol education, which is targeted, realistic and relevant to teenagers' lives, should be the goal.

"Teenage pubs run the risk of simply normalising drinking culture and promoting it, rather than looking at both the positive and negative aspects of alcohol.

"Grooming teenagers to become regular pub-goers is also unfair to the growing number of young teens who would rather not to go to pubs, often for religious or cultural reasons.

"There are far better uses within the community for closed-down pubs, rather than promoting drinking culture to our children."
