Closed Down Pub For Sale in Exeter

The Golden Lion in Exeter has been serving city residents with pints since 1850 but all that could be ending.

The pub on Clifton Road is a Newtown landmark, its Victorian landlord recorded as Stephen Hooper. But after 159 unbroken years of serving local drinkers, it is now up for sale for £275,000.

The recession has been blamed for causing the closure of the pub, which has already attracted strong interest from property developers.

Mark Greig, managing director of pub and property agent Paramount Investments, said: "Although we would like to see it continue as a going concern, we have had recent interest from developers as it is in a planning class which means it can be converted into flats or other retail uses with minimal recourse to the planning authorities."

But he added that efforts to find a licensed trade buyer had not been abandoned.
